“Humanitarianism is an active belief in humanism (the idea of the value of human life) whereby humans practice benevolent treatment and provide assistance to other humans, in order to better humanity for both moral and logical reasons.

I often find myself wondering what I would do with my money if I were to be as rich as Bill Gates or Oprah. The typical “pay off my debts, buy a house, buy a car or two, pay off my parents house…etc” thoughts are passed through my brain, and I think “That’s nice and all, but what could I really do with all of that money?”

On top of taking care of those who took care of me, and establishing myself and having my own dwelling place, I want to do something for the world. I could start some charity organization to help clothe and feed people around the world. I could pump money into the public education system. I could donate money to any good cause I come across, but that just isn’t good enough for me.

Instead, I’d invest my money into a new age of farming. In this new age of farming, the farm lands would be converted into massive green houses. These massive green houses would run on renewable energy, and would convert all heat/kinetic energy into electricity. These massive green houses, or “Green Farms” as I’m calling them could produce food all year, without having to worry about the weather killing crops.

I’d find a way to eliminate the need for pesticides, so we could have good clean organic foods. Have you ever ate an organic banana? They’re grown naturally without the use of pesticides. One bite into them, and you know that this is how a banana is supposed to taste. Imagine being able to consume food without having to worry about what chemicals were used on it. But that’s not the only benefits from my Green Farms.

Not only would we have mass amounts of organic food produced and distributed around the world, but we would have JOBS! Gone would be the days of Mr. Farmer waking up before dawn to begin his grueling day of tending the farm ’til sundown. These green farms could be ran by many farmers and green thumbs. So, not only are we helping to prevent a food shortage, we’re preventing a job shortage, and helping to boost morale and the economy.

I wouldn’t stop there though. With creating these new Green Farms, we need money pumped into alternative energy sources (solar, wind, water) as well as converting farming equipment into efficient and clean machines. They would have to not rely on fossil fuels to be powered. Fully electric vehicles that converts friction and it’s own movement into energy. They would essentially be powering themselves as soon as they start moving.

From there, we have to worry about logistics. Some people would stop at just funding the Green Farms. Others would probably stop at creating new farm equipment that renew their own energy. I would take it farther and invest in alternatively fueled vehicles to transport the foods. This means I’d probably have to create my own logistics company using my vehicles that I fund, which means even more jobs!

With creating these Green Farms, this will eliminate our usage of Mexico for their corn and tomatoes. It would eliminate subsidizing corn in that country and would end the hell that we’re creating for Mexico. The same goes for any other country we use for food.

I’d then provide my Green Farms to Mexico and any other country who would want it. Getting us out of Mexico and ending the subsidization of corn, and the slave labor, we could quell some of the illegal immigration. They come here because they’re poor and hungry. They want to provide a better life for them and their families. With them having the Green Farms, their economies will be boosted. They will have more food, and they can use the money to improve so much in their country.

Eventually, the whole world could have Green Farms. Each country creating tons of new jobs and becoming self-sufficient with food. This would eventually destroy how some countries make their money through import/exports of food, but that’s ok, because everyone would have food.

With all of the money generated from these ventures, I’d still have too much. I don’t need a whole lot of money to survive, and I don’t need a giant mansion, flashy cars, or any of that. I’d still live like a regular guy, but with more money. I’d definitely have lots of nice things, because I’d deserve them and owe them to myself. But, there’s still a ton of money laying around, and so much more I could do with it.

My next big venture would definitely be in education. Art and music programs need re-stimulated in schools. Culture needs introduced to children. The whole public education system needs a huge reform. The school environment itself needs changed. More after school programs need created to give kids something to do. I can’t even count how many stupid things I did as a kid as a result of boredom and having nothing better to do.

Educators would have better training to be teachers and to deal with students. They’d be put through more licensing and certifications to ensure that they can be the best they can be. On top of that, educators would be paid more money. I don’t think teachers get paid enough, especially those who stand above the rest. I don’t think I’d introduce merit pay for teachers who do a little better than others because my teachers would all be great. Incentives will be put in place to boost morale and keep them striving to do better. Every few years, teachers would have to be re-certified, just like in the IT world to make sure their skills are up to date.

Schools would be remodeled to be more eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing. A fun clean environment is a healthy learning environment. No school would be without hot water, air conditioning, and heat. Every student would have good healthy food because it would be provided by my Green Farms.

Working up-to-date technology would be provided for all schools. Since I’m a computer nerd, this is a must have. We’re in a digital age, and everyone needs to know how to use a computer effectively. Books would also be relevant and new. I remember being in school and having books my parents used, and being taught out-dated material. That would end completely with my money being pumped into the schools.

There’s so much I could do if I had the resources. Maybe Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and Oprah will take notice to my ideas and help a fella out. One could only dream, and a dreamer is what I am.

—————————–

Above is an email I received in one of my accounts recently that I decided I’d use for the purpose of this blog. I get these quite often, and I wonder how these people think this could even work. The first problem I noticed with this email is the mismatch of names. I see that the email is supposedly from Anne Spoorenberg, but the first line of the email is “My name is Mrs.stella luz taborda”. I don’t know about you, but Mrs. Stella Luz Taborda does not look like Anne Spoorenberg, but maybe in some far away land, that’s how they’re translated. The next issue I find in this email is that it is poorly written, which destroys any chance that it had to appear professional and legitimate. Next is the mismatching of locations. The email came from a .FR address, which is a French email address, but the person is in Spain.

Ok, so all of those flags there definitely tell me that this email is far from legitimate, but lets just say I’m not much of a detective and just can’t catch these obvious flaws. How would someone like me, who thinks this is real know for sure this is a scam? How about the story in of itself? How does this person even know who I am? Do I know this person? Why would this person want me to help handle such a large sum of money? This story seems pretty far-fetched and a little too good to be true, and that is the case here. You don’t know the person or how they know you, the story seems a little odd, and you don’t even know anyone who’d lend you $20, so how could it be true? It’s not true, and these scams if you fall for them, will drain your wallets and bank accounts completely.

So, how do these scams work, if in fact they lure someone in? Well, they’ll tell you that they’ll send you this money, but they’ll need you to pay for some transfer fees and an escrow account. Whenever you see escrow mentioned, you should know to stop and end any contact with the person. For the sake of education, we’ll pretend that I keep falling for this scam. I paid the fees and have my escrow account setup, but there’s been a delay with processing. A couple things then can happen from here. 1) The scammers setup a fake escrow site and have just stolen all of my credit card/bank information and will begin draining my account. I’m now a victim of identity threft, and need to contact the proper authorities ASAP! 2) They need me to pay for some holding fees, processing fees, or some kind of customs fee or just anything they can think of. Since I could really use $2.5million, a few hundred bucks here and there won’t even matter, and as soon as my money gets here I’ll be good. More issues come up, more money is needed, but I’m drained! There’s nothing I can do, so I tell the people I’m out of money and won’t be able to spend anymore. I need them to get it taken care of so I can get my money and I’ll even repay them for the troubles. There’s no contact for a few days, and there’s no way for me to get ahold of them. They just walked off with $2,500 of my cash and I fell for every bit of the scam.

These scams have shown up in my email quite frequently since I was 16 years old, and I always wondered how these people knew about me. They’re all from different countries, but somehow they’re either related to me, or I’m the relative of their dying friend who wants to give me lots and lots of their money for no real reason. I’ve seen them show up as me winning lotteries and the scam is all the same, and it never fails to amuse me.

Remember – If you don’t know the person, don’t know how they know you, and the story seems too good to be true, then it’s most likely a big scam. Do not fall for this, and report the email ASAP.

Stay safe on the web!

-Bobby

I often encounter people who need me to help them fix their computers. Usually, it’s some kind of spyware or virus they got from a malicious website or spam/phishing scams in their email. I typically just clean up their computers, drop Spybot on the computer, and tell the person to be careful with what they click and to be aware of who is sending them stuff. Sometimes, I’ll go into greater detail if the person is willing to learn and wants to do something to stay safe online. Now, I’m going to post what I suggest that people try to stay safe, and hope that word spreads to more people. It’ll also make my job easier as I can just point people to my blog for details. I will be writing a series of blogs covering various topics such as phishing scams, lottery/inheritence scams, spyware/virus emails and instant messages, and anything else I can think of that might be something to avoid on the web. The first blog I’m writing is on Phishing Scams and how to not fall for them and defend against future scams.

Phishing Scams – Think back to all of the emails you get about your Paypal account or your online bank account credentials being compromised. You probably don’t even use your Paypal account all that often and think that it’s probably not possible, but that email looks legit and you get curious. It has everything a real email from Paypal would, complete with official logos, images, a link to a website that looks just like the Paypal login page except for one major piece of damning evidence. When you’re on that Paypal login page, look at the address bar. Does it say ‘https://www.paypal.com/’ or is it an IP address that looks like ‘http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/’ (the x’s represent numbers that make up the IP address) Paypal would never send their users to an IP address for the domain name. It will ALWAYS be Paypal.com (unless they change their name).

So, what happens when you login through this spoof page? Well, when you hit submit with your email address and password are sent to a database that someone had setup for the purpose of collecting people’s credentials. Once you’ve hit submit, they’ve got your information almost instantly, and will use your account as they see fit. Sometimes, scammers will tell you that you need to pay them to get your account back. This concept works the same for the bank scams, and anything else really that would involve your finances online.

Another way that these scammers will attempt to get your credentials is by simply asking you. Of course they won’t reveal their true identity, and will pose as an administrator of some type with the company telling you that your account has been breached and they need your login information to verify ownership or to get into your account to do something to block the alleged unauthorized user from getting to anything else in your account. If you’re not too computer and internet savvy, you might be prone to this attempt, but you need to remember that companies like Paypal and other financial institutions will NEVER ask you for your username and password. Also, the reasoning for their wanting of your password doesn’t quite make sense does it? What can they do with your account that you can’t already do? If someone is suspected of hijacking your account, you can login to your account first off to see if your password has been changed. If it hasn’t, you can simply change it and that’ll be the end of that.

Defending Against Phishing – How do you protect yourself from these scams you say? Here’s some steps you can take to make sure your account isn’t compromised.

1) When you get an email saying you need to login to your paypal or bank account due to a security issue take a close look at the email. Make sure everything looks legitimate, including who sent the email. If it doesn’t come directly from someone @paypal.com or your bank’s .com site. There are ways that people can spoof their email address to appear legitimate so then we can move on to step 2 of defending against this scam.

2) Mouse over the link they provide in the email and wait a second. Your browser or email client will display the true link in one way or another. When your mouse is sitting over the link, you can look at the status bar at the bottom of your browser or email client. In the status bar, you’ll see a website address. If it’s not showing a real domain name and showing an IP address instead, DO NOT CLICK IT! These two tricks will save you tons of time and trouble and will allow you to move on to the next steps of defense – blocking.

3) If you want to make sure that you don’t get hit by the same scam sites, or anyone else on your computer getting hit by them you can block the actual scam sites. To do this, you’ll need to right click on the malicious and illegitimate link provided to you and click Copy (MAC users will have to do something different, I don’t know what it is because I don’t use a MAC). Next, you’ll want to open your browser and add the site to a blocked sites/restricted sites list. Below are the steps to block sites in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox – other browsers I don’t know, so you’ll have to poke around to find the equivalent areas.

Internet Explorer – Click on Tools then Internet Options. At the top of the Internet Options dialog box, click on the Security tab and then you’ll see a white box with some different icons in it. Click on the Restricted Sites icon, then below that box is a button that says Sites, click that. In the “Add this website to the zone” box, right click and paste the link you copied earlier. Instead of blocking that full address, we’re going to block the root of the address so that nothing from that address can get through. Edit out everything after ‘http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/’ or ‘http://www.domainname.com’. Click the add button and the site is now blocked.

Mozilla Firefox 3.0 – A neat feature that Mozilla Firefox 3.0 has is a site labeling feature. In the address bar, you’ll notice that there’s an icon to the left of your address. These icons are color coded in accordance to their safety based on digital certificates that are used to validate the legitimacy of a site. Unfortunately, anyone can get a digital certificate signed to make their sites appear more legitimate. Firefox will automatically block any known threats, and prevent you with a red page warning you about the site. You won’t have to worry about that site getting you because Firefox blocked it for you. Let’s say you clicked the link anyways – you can click on the icon next to the address and view some information on the site. If you click the More Information button, a new little window will pop up with all kinds of information gathered on the site. There’s all kinds of helpful information there to let you know if the site is legitimate, and what kind of measures they take in making sure your information isn’t compromised (encryption) If you click the permissions tab, you can block the site from loading pictures, keeping cookies, opening pop-up windows. Doing this will pretty much block the site from loading up anything malicious to your PC. It won’t block the site completely, but Mozilla is pretty good at blocking out known forged/spoof sites.

Also, you’ll want to check for some kind of verification image from a digital certificate company such as VeriSign. The image will look like

And if you check in the status bar, you’ll see a link to something such as ‘https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/User/popup/SecurityKeyVIP-outside’ and when you click that, a window will popup offering you a little more information. Always make sure that the link showing up in the status bar is pointing to the actual domain name, and not something else like an IP address. Also, you always need to make sure it is a legitimate company providing the security. You can find out by simply going to their site, or doing a little search on them to find out if they’re legit or not.

4) Now that you’ve blocked the sites in your browser, it’s time to get rid of those emails. Nearly all email providers have a way of blocking spam/junk mail. Take full advantage of this feature and report/block all junk/spam so that you won’t receive as much. One thing you need to keep in mind is that spam email will never be completely blocked from your email. Things slip through all the time, and it’s practically impossible right now to block them all out.

Apply these concepts and practices to everything online. Phishing doesn’t only occur in your email with your paypal or bank accounts. People will attempt to get your social networking logins, your email credentials, and basically anything else they think is of value to them. Always remember that these sites will never ever ask you for your username and password. It’s unethical practice, and a security breach in itself.

Stay safe on the web!

Seeing as how I’ve been around computers my whole life, been working on them since I was about 12, and am majoring in Network Security and Computer Forensics, I’ve decided to bestow upon you free software and knowledge (as well as really long sentences).

First, we need to make sure you have a decent anti virus and spyware protection. I was recently turned on to Avira Anti-Virus, and I must say I really like it. It’s simple to use, and it’s free! Avira has a Guard that, when set to Active, will scan all files coming into your PC for a virus, and stop any bad files before they can infect you. It will make a system beep, and pop up a list of actions to take with the suspected file. Make sure to keep the program updated so that your computer can be protected against the newest threats.

Next, you’ll need some good spyware protection. I’ve been using Spybot Search & Destroy for a few years now, and I think it’s probably my favorite. I’ve tried other anti-spyware programs, but this one just seemed to last longer on my computer. As soon as you download the program, download any updates that may be available, then immunize before you search for issues.

I suggest that you check for updates atleast once a day on both the anti-virus and the anti-spyware. Also, you should periodically scan your system for threats. How often you’re on the Internet downloading things, will determine how often you should probably scan your system. If you’re a casual user, you can get away with scanning once a week to twice a month, but still check for updates every day. For those of you who like to live on the Internet (like I’ve been known to do) and download tons of stuff, you might want to scan your computer every two or three days. You never know what can sneak in when you’re not paying attention.

Recently, my Computer Forensics professor showed the class a neat little site with tons of free software. Open Source Windows is a site that has great free software that isn’t loaded up with any viruses or spyware. There’s stuff for webbrowsing (Mozilla Firefox), email (Mozilla Thunderbird), chat clients (Pidgin), RSS feeds (RSS Owl), to photo editing software (GIMP, Paint.net, Inkscape), 3D modeling (Blender), games and many more things. Check out the screensaver Electric Sheep, it’s visually stunning!

Next time I do a technology blog, I believe I’ll do a phishing/internet security awareness article.

Hello everyone!

I’ve decided that I wanted to break free of the Myspace Blog, and take my words public. My blog has no specific purpose or scope, except for the fact that I have things on my mind that I wish to get out to the public. What you can expect to find here: technology based articles, rants, political banter, fictional writings, music stuff, religion, and general updates on what I’m up to. I hope everyone enjoys my new blog, and hopefully it takes off and I can spread my influence across the world (wide web that is).

I’m trying to keep this blog as organized as possible, without spending too much time into customizing it or spending any money. To navigate the different topics, use the categories to the right to see what I’ve been writing about. My recent posts will show below this post as well.

Since I’ve gone public with my blog, I’ve decided to write up as much as I can about who I am for all of my new viewers. There might even be some things in here my friends already know, so read up and learn as much as you can about me. This blog is accurate up to Oct 12th, 2008

August 4th, 1986 I was born. It was a hot rainy day, my mom broke a doctors hand when I was born, and I had earned the nickname of “Scooter” by my dad’s (RIP) mom (RIP) within the first hour of my life. The story told to me was that when a nurse had pulled me down to the end of my hospital crib, I would scoot myself back up to the original end I was laying in. That should’ve been a warning to my mom that I wasn’t going to be a typical kid, nor would I be easy to handle growing up. Sorry mom.

The day I was born

Growing up, I was definitely not what my mom would expect. I was INSANE as a child. I forced my parents to read everything to me until I had learned how to read myself, and way before any of my peers. I was a very hyper child with what seemed like a never ending source of energy. I destroyed things when I got angry, snuck out of the house in the winter wearing only a diaper and my dad’s boots to go play on the neighbors swingset. I had also suffered from night terrors (if you don’t know what they are, look them up, I’ll write about it some other time) and had a photographic memory.

By the time I was in school, I was already more intelligent than everyone else, and I liked to rub it in peoples faces. I think I barely made it a couple months into kindergarten, when I was expelled because I was too hyper and out of control. I was then diagnosed with ADHD and put on the child zombification drug ‘Ritalin’. Later, I was put through some sort of intelligence test and had wowed the people testing me and was put right into first grade the following school year instead of repeating Kindergarten. I think at that point, I was an alright child, as long as I was on the Ritalin.

By 6th grade, I had developed a love for Heavy Metal and anything that just seemed weird, dark, or scary to everyone else. I had also got into Marilyn Manson, thanks to my parents (which they hated showing me him) and met my best friend, James (my parents never liked him either). Middle school era me was probably the most rebellious me ever, but was also the time in which I had fell in love completely with computers. I was also getting heavy into doing bicycle stunts and rode a bike as much as I could every day.

By the time I got into 9th grade, I knew I wanted a career in computers. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but it didn’t matter because I knew the possibilities were nearly endless. Also, I had just got a guitar and started growing my hair out so I could be just like my friend James and all of the metal bands that came out of the 80’s.

10th grade, I was involved in anything technology related. I excelled in our tech lab where we had these different stations setup for different things in computers. Graphic design, web design, video editing, word processing, computer trouble shooting and I even took an extra class on programming in Visual Basic. This is also the year I lost my virginity, and realized I should’ve waited like I had originally planned.

11th grade, I got into Eastland Career Center for Interactive Media. I had enjoyed the webdesign module in our tech class the previous year so much, I decided I wanted to specalize in this field. I was in the best shape of my life, and stopped riding my bike as much to focus on setting myself up for a career. Mrs. Friend (the Interactive Media teacher), and Mr. Umstead (the Information Technology/Programming) teacher had both fought over who got me for the first few months of school because they both knew I’d be great at whichever path I took. I ultimately went with Interactive Media so I could exercise my creative muscles and have fun doing it.

That year, I had got on this grant project where we had to make a tutorial cd for some Distance Learning Video Conference hardware/software, but with a focus on gearing it towards the blind. My job was to actually build the tutorial like a website, so I had to then learn how to do websites in Dreamweaver MX instead of just notepad. On this project I had met my first love, Katie, who was a student at the Ohio State School for the Blind and was working with us to help us make the tutorial more blind accessible. We talked for about four months before we cheesily decided to start dating on Valentines Day 2003.

12th grade, I had completely taken off with the web design and was really happy with my choice. I was making websites for money, and decided that I should go to college and get a degree in this field so I could be a real professional. I was already helping teach the class on how to use Dreamweaver and Photoshop, as well as how to do HTML (4.0). A month after I graduated, I got my first job which lasted about two weeks, and had started going to college at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online. Also, I was running a webzine called ‘The Blastbeat’ where some friends and I reviewed music, wrote articles, and interviewed musicians.

After my 18th birthday, my mom, Katie, and I were in a terrible car accident where my mom was seriously injured. I was supposed to be driving that day, and had driven to Dayton no problem, but was too nervous to drive back. Also at some point, I had quit going to AIO and switched to DeVry for Computer Information Systems because I wasn’t happy with the Interactive Media program.

January 23rd 2005 was the day that the Bobby everyone knew died. Katie and I had been together for almost two years when we broke up. Earlier in 2004 I had proposed to Katie in front of A LOT of people inside an airport after she had returned from visiting her sister in Connecticut, so this had completely crushed my heart and soul. I was an overachiever, extremely motivated, almost always in a great mood, and basically an all around great person to be around. I had transformed almost instantly into a depressed wreck who slept all day, worked at night, and became spiteful, bitter, angry, and basically the exact opposite of what I had been.

From January 23rd 2005 to September 24th, 2007 I was not the best person I could’ve been. I went through a few jobs, changed colleges, but didn’t stick with them, had countless numbers of extremely horrible relationships, lived with a couple different friends, gained 50lbs, and had been kicked out of my parents house. I did happen to join a couple bands along the way as a new hobby so I could keep myself busy and not sleep all the time. I joined Pain Awaiting in Sept of 2006 and have been there ever since. I got fired from a warehouse exactly 1 year to the day that I was hired on as a seasonal associate (and never was hired permanently for that whole year) and that had been my wakeup call. I was sick of working in warehouses, doing stupid little tasks that didn’t challenge my brain at all. My brain hungered for knowledge and new experiences, and that’s when I decided I REALLY wanted to go back to college.

Just after my 21st birthday, I had picked out The University of Northwestern Ohio as my new school. I had noticed they had what seemed to be a really nice Network Security program, and since it was 100 miles away from home, I knew I wouldn’t be distracted by all of my friends. Three days later, I was kicked out of my parents house and had to move in with my friend Zack at his grandmas house. That day sealed the deal for me, and I vowed to completely turn my life around and stop being a loser and become something.

September 24th 2007, I moved to Lima and started going to college. It was rough at first, but I got used to it and stuck with it. At some point during the school year, my Network Security professor had introduced to me the world of Computer Forensics. I researched it and decided that it was what I really wanted to be in the IT field. I was sick of Net Admin/Computer Troubleshooting jobs and wanted to get into something that required usage of other skills that I have (creative thinking/problem solving, psychology, law). Basically, I decided I wanted to be Grissom (CSI: Las Vegas) of Computer Forensics.

Unfortunately, my Net Sec professor had been ‘let go’ from the school and a new teacher had been hired for Network Security, but he wasn’t going to be teaching Computer Forensics. Anxiety had risen, and I didn’t know if I was going to get into Computer Forensics, and be stuck with Network Security.

Things started looking up in the summer of 2008 when I had learned that UNOH hired someone to teach Computer Forensics. Not only did they just find a professore, they found someone who was perfect for the job, and has been a pretty big inspiration for me and I’ve only known the guy a couple weeks.

Now you guys know my history. This will be updated when old chapters end and new ones begin.
